Navigating Cold, Flu and Virus Season With An Oriental Medicine Mindset

Our colleague, and friend of BIOM, Michael Max, L.Ac and Chinese Medicine Herbalist, has written this useful article about how to stay healthy during cold and flu season. A good read, filled with good information.

“As the length of the days slips away and sunlight begins to fail earlier in the day, it is important at this moment to prepare our bodies for the journey into winter.

Colds and flus are more prevalent in the darker months. Our immune systems wither a bit in the winter. And as we are still in the midst of the Covid pandemic it is especially important to keep ourselves vital and strong.

Here are a few ideas and methods from the treasure-house of Chinese medicine.

Sunshine is your friend. It’s the primal expression of Yang Qi, which is what powers our immunity. Get into the sunshine everyday that you can. Twenty minutes is enough. Hold the sunscreen, as you want the natural Vitamin D production that is stimulated by sunlight. Vitamin D is protective against Covid, flus and colds. In addition to sunlight, supplement with Vitamin D.

Cordyceps is a medicinal mushroom that strengthens the lungs and supports respiratory system. It’s a great herb for anyone who has lung issues like asthma, chronic coughs, tendency towards bronchitis or those who easily catch colds.

Sugar. Yeah, give this a pass.

Pears, especially Asian pears are helpful in promoting the proper moisture and secretions in the lungs. Anyone who gets dry coughs should eat one of these a day through the fall.

A positive outlook and enjoyment of life are key; some of the best ways to enhance immunity.

Social connections matter. We are wired to be social creatures, and while limiting some aspects of face-to-face connection is prudent just now, staying connected to our family, friends and community is vitally important.

Drink warm fluids and avoid ice water. It’s getting cold out there, and your immune system works better with warmth. Don’t put out that protective fire.

Keeping your neck covered is one of those old grandmother things. But those old grandmothers got old for a reason. Keeping wind and cold off the back of your neck is a good way to prevent colds. Especially if you tend to be sensitive to drafts.

Consider using Chinese medicinal herbs. Chinese doctors are using herbs to help people stay healthy, and also to recover from Covid-19. A number of formulations seem to be protective, and others can help you recover, especially from the sequela of a viral infection. You’ll want to speak with an experienced herbalist — this is not a DIY situation.”
